17 January 2017 | MUDEC-Museo delle Culture, Milan 18 January 2017 | Politecnico di Milano, Milan "TRACES - Transmitting Contentious Cultural Heritages with the Arts: From Intervention to Co-Production" will conclude its three years research programme with a two-day event, merging a critical overview on the main findings ensuing from its investigations and a forward-looking discussion about the future of contentious heritages transmission in Europe and the concept of Reflexive Europeanisation. A highly interdisciplinary panel of scholars and practitioners from all over the world will trigger a multi-perspective debate. The Simposia will culminate in the opening of TRACES final exhibition, curated by Suzana Milevska at the Politecnico di Milano. The exhibition will explore various methodologies, artistic research methods, and strategies which are employed by contemporary artists who conceptualised their artistic practice though exhaustive research of the images, objects, spaces, and events with difficult past.

Some of the pertinent questions which triggered this exhibition – such as which objects and images are considered contentious cultural heritages, and how they are transmitted and reflected in the European culturalscapes – will be addressed regardless to whether the researched materials are included and/or displayed in collections of various European art and cultural institutions, or they are presented in a more general context and in public spaces. The exhibition therefore aims to map and critically reflect the state of art in the field of artistic research and research based practices that deal with shameful images, objects, entire collections and other spaces of contentious heritage. In parallel, it explores the potentials of artistic research practices for production of new and specific knowledges in various research and academic fields, and the possibilities for catalysing social changes through such art practices towards inclusiveness, creativity, and innovation. More information about the conference programme and registrations will be available in the forthcoming month. "Stay tuned.
