The Arena di Verona Festival is a summer festival of opera, located in the city of Verona Italy. The first operas were performed in 1913 in celebration of the centenary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi and were produced by the tenor Giovanni Zenatello and the theatre impresario Ottone Rovato. Opera performances are given in Arena di Verona, an ancient Roman amphitheatre, which was capable of holding 30,000 spectators. Performances traditionally begin at dusk and spectactors on the stone seats of the arena create small candles on this mobile phones to simulte the "mocoleto", as darkness falls and the performances begin. One of the annual favourite highlights of the festival is the performance of Aida by Giuseppe Verdi. Aida is a hugely resplendent opera, perfectly suited for the immensity of the venue yet also manages to capture a piquant intimacy with the audience.

This year 7 there are performances with Franco Zeffirelli’s remarkable sets, enriched by costumes by Anna Anni. These are 23rd June, 28th June, 8th July, 10th July, 14th July, 19th July and 22nd July. Performances commence at 9pm.
